looks like a tapir. they're native to south america, i believe. either that or it's something else completely.

I think you pronounce it as you would "paper". "TAY-purr"... or perhaps spice up the second syllable a bit so that it's more like "TAY-pier". Either/or.

seems the one in the photo is indeed a lowland tapir, native to brazil and really most of the south american rainforests.
